Northern Taiwan

Northern Taiwan is home to the Atayal and Saisiyat indigenous tribes. Ancestor worship is deeply embedded in Atayal culture, as can be observed during the annual Ancestor Worship Ceremony from August to October. Traditionally, the women of this tribe would be tattooed with a V-shaped mainly design to mark the accomplishment of their weaving skills, while forehead and chin tattoos marked men as warriors who have come of age.

The Saisiyat are evenly distributed throughout Taiwan. The tribe is distinguished by family names, which reflect a close connection to nature, as well as a culture of facial tattooing. The tribe's main annual festival is the Dwarf Spirit Ceremony during the 10th lunar month.
