Suao Cold Springs/Renze Hot Springs
Ilan is a land not only of beautiful natural scenery but also rich mineral-spring resources. The cold springs of Suao produce colorless, odorless bicarbonate water at a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. The water is naturally carbonated. There are only two sources of such mineral springs in the world, the other being in Italy. The water is a bit startling when you first immerse yourself in it, because it is colder than body temperature; in a few minutes, though, your body will be suffused with warmth and the bubbles caused by the carbonation will instantly perk up your spirits.
The spring water can be used to make food and drinks; Suao is famous for its goat-meat stew, and in earlier days was known for its "glass-bead" soda, both of which use (or used) the carbonated spring water. The Renze hot springs are at the midway point on trips up to the Mt.Taiping Forest Recreation Area. The calcium carbonate water here is extremely hot, frequently emerging from the ground at above 95 degrees Celsius; it is colorless and odorless, and leaves your skin feeling smooth and lustrous.
After bathing in the steaming water you can proceed on to the Taipingshan Forest Recreation Area for a leisurely visit and see the Lantai Nursery, Primeval Forest Park, Mt. Independence Wildlife Preserve, and the beautiful scenery at Cuifung Lake. Especially notable is the "sea of clouds" that sometimes stretches between the forest park and Mt. Independence. This is an outstanding place for viewing the sunrise, the sea of clouds, and snow-covered country. If you have a taste for seafood you can go on to the Nanfangao fishing harbor, where there are three fishing ports and fish markets, each with its separate function.
The fishermen's association holds an auction at the first fish market every day at about 2:00 p.m., while at the second fish market the individual fishermen each sells his own catch from about 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Yugang Road, alongside the third fishing harbor, is filled with seafood and special products shops, giving it a strong attraction for tourists.
